A Trip to Online Resources

If you are a teacher looking for quick and easy access to instructional materials, then you may want to check out this Web site. Trip1.org [http://www.trip1.org/] is a site created by a classroom teacher and technology specialist here in Laurel, MS. Mr. Jeff Davis first created the project to fulfill his graduation requirements for the Master’s of Science of Instructional Technology program at Southern Miss. The site continues to grow since then and contains many inks to different resources that both teachers and students can appreciate. The site serves as a “clearinghouse” to different Web sites categorized by different subject areas such as mathematics, science, and language arts. Once a person enters a subject area, he/she would see links to various Web sites containing instructional resources. A nice feature of the subject-area pages is Mr. Davis’ identification of grade level(s) that the site may be targeted to. For instance, if one teaches fourth grade math, Trip1.org tells the teacher which sites would be most appropriate to use. In addition, the site creator also provides personal comments concerning the site’s benefit and usefulness. Each site listed on the subject-area pages is numbered so that teachers using Trip1.org in the classroom can tell their students to go to a certain number on a page (e.g., under the Science area, go to site #18 to learn “how stuff works”) to access the information. Numbering the site links makes searching easier, because now students do not have to “hunt” for the links on the page. In addition to subject-area pages, Trip1.org has many links to other different instructional resources such as teacher utilities, homework helpers, kid-friendly search engines, and other popular instructional sites. Teachers have communicated to me the value and usefulness of this Web site in their classrooms, so I know that this place is certainly worth checking out. Among all the site links offered by Trip1.org, I am sure that you will be able to find one that you would like to travel to. Enjoy your trip online.

Harness Full-Screen, 3D Views on the Web

The 2009 MECA Conference Keynote Speaker, Will Richardson, posted on his blog, Weblogged, an article describing a new Firefox add-on that gives users full-screen and 3D. It is simply a tool that you have to see to believe. It allows users to browse through a number or multimedia portals quickly. Users can view video and images from places like Flickr, YouTube, Amazon, and others. To see the demo or find out more information, go to PicLens.

Want a Better Gmail???

Do you like Gmail but secretly wish that it had an interface similar to other webmail clients? Is the Gmail Interface using labels the only thing that is holding you back from implementing Google Apps for Education in your school district? If so, try Better Gmail. It is a Firefox extension that transforms or “skins” the original interface into one that is more familiar to most webmail users. Better Gmail is the creation of Gina Trapani of Lifehacker (a great blog to subscribe to) and can be downloaded here.
